Though no reason has been given for the closure of the North-East offices of the Mercy Corps, it was learnt that the international Non-governmental organisation has been at loggerheads with the Nigeria army after a vehicle conveying some contractors who were on their way to purchase items for internally-displaced persons (IDPs) on behalf of Mercy Corps was intercepted.  “Mercy Corps is suspending operations in Borno and Yobe States, Nigeria, following the closure of four of our field offices by the Nigerian military,” the NGO said in a statement. A source told The Cable that the closure may be connected to the N29 million found in the intercepted vehicle belonging to the NGO and “belief that some NGOs sponsor the insurgents” “One of the

Image
Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka has described the charges against Omoyele Sowore as a confirmation of the Buhari-led administration's unprecedented level of paranoia.  Revealing that he first dismissed the report as fake news, Soyinka added that 'Sowore's Issue' has moved beyond harassment and taken on a sinister direction. He further stated that the nation had failed to learn from past experiences. He said, “This is utterly depressing news. So, the Sowore affair has moved beyond harassment and taken on a sinister direction. Outside the country where I happened to be engaged at the moment, I can testify that the immediate reaction around me was to dismiss this as yet another grotesque product of fake news, of which Nigerians have become the greatest practitioners. I confess that I also joined in this school of thought – at the start. “Further checks have however confirmed that this government has indeed attained an unprecedented level of paranoia. I do n

Image
Prof Ango Abdullahi the leader of Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) and former Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria,  has stated that there is nothing wrong with power remaining in the north in 2023 if Nigerians decide so through majority votes.  According to him, a critical evaluation of positions of different ethnic groups in the country showed that the North has been short-changed as key positions were not with them. Prof Ango also insisted that there is nothing wrong with the appointment of more Service Chiefs from the region as other ethnic groups have enjoyed it before now without the North complaining. “What we are witnessing is a sad development, very dangerous arguments that are being put forward. How many offices are we even talking about and you are saying lopsidedness of offices? “Have you looked at the offices in the civil service and those that occupy them, so what is the fuss all about? Are they parochial or are they biased in the discharge of d

We expect up to 25% of trainees to die during recruitment — Ex-Defence spokesman Gen. Agim

Image
Ex- spokesman of the Defence Headquarters, Gen. John Agim Agim (rtd) has revealed that they expect 15-25% of successful applicants in each recruitment to die during training.  Gen. Agim stated that the expectation of death in training is why applicants sign a bond of being responsible for their decision when filling a form for the Nigerian Defence Academy.  “The military training we get already takes care of whatever situation we find ourselves. . In training, we are taught how to survive in whichever situation we find ourselves. Even if we are captured by the enemy, we know how to survive so we don’t die as a prisoner of war. . So by the time we go for the real operations, to us it usually looks like a rehearsal because we have already seen the worst during trainings. I urge Nollywood film makers to try and see ways of how they can produce a few of our drills so that the public can know some of the things that we go through. . I can assure you that we have a robust trainin
